You open your renewal notice and see a higher price. No accidents. No tickets. Same car.
So what changed?
Your driving record matters, but it isn’t the only thing that determines your premium. I want to explain a few reasons your price can change and what’s worth checking before you accept the increase or switch companies.
Your record is only part of the picture
Insurance companies consider more than your individual claims. They also look at the claims experience of groups of drivers with similar characteristics. That means an accident-free driver can still see a rate increase. Source: NAIC
The cost of paying claims matters, too. Higher vehicle repair costs and medical expenses can put pressure on premiums, even when nothing about your own driving has changed. Source: Insurance Information Institute
That doesn’t tell us exactly why your renewal went up. To understand your increase, we need to look at your policy.
What I’d suggest checking first
Before making a decision, pull out your previous policy and your renewal notice. Compare:
- The drivers and vehicles listed.
- Your address, vehicle use, and annual mileage.
- Coverage limits and deductibles.
- Discounts and whether you still qualify for them.
Something as simple as outdated mileage information is worth correcting. It’s also worth asking about available discounts rather than assuming they’re already included.
Compare the coverage, not just the payment
A lower quote deserves a closer look. Does it have the same liability limits? Is the deductible higher? Did rental reimbursement disappear?
Raising a deductible may reduce your premium, but it also means paying more yourself after a covered claim. I wouldn’t suggest making that change without considering whether you could comfortably cover the difference.
I can’t promise every review will produce a lower price. But I can help you understand what you’re paying for and compare your options without guessing.
